Holy Sensory Illusion, Batman

I have a post about the McGurk Illusion up at PsychologyToday. Here is a video that describes the effect, but you should still click here to read the article.
And by the way - to the nerds: I realize that Batman, technically, does not possess super-human powers. But isn't that why the analogy works? ;-)

  1. Is it weird that I heard PA PA PA? Anyway, loved the article and the video, I'm a psychology student and I'm fascinated by synesthesia. Here's a question; what about the way we can see a texture and automatically imagine how it'll feel if we touch it, or how it'll sound if we scratch it with our nails? could that also give us some tiny insight into what synesthesia is?

  2. I just heard "Ba" the whole time. Weird.

  3. I saw and heard "Ah ah ah" every single time. In fact, I'm so convinced that's what was actually happening that I doubt the legitimacy of this video.

  4. I heard BA every time. The problem is he doesn't make it *look* like he's saying GA. For this to really work, there has to be an incongruity between the sound and what you see. If he didn't close his lips each time he made the GA movement, I think it would be a lot more effective. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypd5txtGdGw for a much better example of the effect.
